Before the end of 2009 we asked some of the most interesting blogs and magazines around a few questions about the last year, what projects they though were best and what issues they expect to be most debated in the following year. Today we are showing you what the best of 2009 is according to 0300TV, an amazing Chilean video-based blog with lots of interviews with international architects from Chile to China, dealing with specific projects as well as with crucial issues in architecture and planning (we specifically wrote about the site on this very old post). Since this post is the first of a series, stay tuned for more!

What do you think are the 3 most representative posts you published this year?
1. Chile: Public Works 1997-2007

2. Pezo Von Ellrichshausen Architects: Context & Work System

3. François Roche Interview / R&Sie(n) (part 1) (part 2)

Copenhagen, acknowledged by the Danish as the 2008 best city for cycling, doesn’t rest on its laurels and looks ahead to become the world’s best city for bike-lovers. The city Municipality has announced that, by 2015,  the city aims not only to improve its sustainable bicycle policy – 350 kilometres of cycle tracks and 40 kilometres of green cycle routes – but to better the biker choice. The city council aims at:

- a minimum of 50% of Copenhageners cycling to their place of work or education

- a reduction of at least 50% in the number of cyclists seriously injured in Copenhagen traffic

- at least 80% of Copenhagen cyclists feeling safe in traffic

- a new bike-sharing system

For this latter goal the city of Copenhagen has launched an international competition, the CPH Bike-Share Competition. Architecture and design studios from the 5 continents have accepted the challenge and last week the winners were announced. The gold medals are Openbike by Lots Design, Koucky & Partners and Myloop by Thomas Coulbeaut.

After Denmark (45 entries) Italy has been the second country for number of entries (12 entries)… Not bad news, right? The bike must strike our notes. Here’s the brilliant project by snark – space making in co-operation with Alberto Mariotti and ABICI:

The installation In/odore, created and realized by diverserighe studio and located within the Courtyard of Honour in Palazzo d’Accursio in Bologna, is an intriguing project exercise. The aim was to ponder on Nature and the artificial, on essences and synthesis, on the highly imaginative chances the world of perfumes can disclose.

The location is Bologna, its natureless yet scent-rich historical centre. The mission: to abstract/extract nature out of it. So, the installation becomes mirror-like. Underside, the artificial and monotonous world of flowers blossomed on reinforcing rods, ready to be smelled and kept in a perfumery, always the same. Upside, on the other hand, a cloud of hanging flowers, caducous like all natural things and slowly withering as the time of the exhibition passes by. Read more

Anyone wandering in the streets of Milan – more crowded and frenetic than ever because of the pre-christmas presents rush – could bump into 12 huge fuchsia snails. Don’t worry! You’re not subject to weariness hallucinations nor shopping stress, you’re surrounded by REgeneration, the new travelling installation by Cracking Art Group (Renzo Nucara, Marco Veronese, Alex Angi, Carlo Rizzetti, Kicco, William Sweetlove) supported by the Ministry for Arts and Culture, the Ministry of the Environment and by Milan Culture Council Department.

The fuchsia snails are 2 metres high and 3 metres long, they’re made of recyclable plastic and invite the passer-by to slowness and careful listening.

The snail stands for the reclamation of the slow quality of life, in contrast with the typically frenetic rhythm of the metropolis. The snail is a guide towards quality, it moves consciously towards an ethical and economical recovery”, the authors explain. The little creatures came out of Palazzo Marino on november 18 and now they’ve invaded Piazza della Scala, Piazza San Fedele and Piazzetta Reale, winning praise among tourists and the Milanese. You just have to get closer, touch them, and take a picture. Read more

Few final adjustment works have finally brought to completion three wooden costructions along Seljord Lake, in the Telemark district of Norway. The three structures – a sauna, an observatory deck and a shelter for fishermen on the lake shore – have been designed and built by a group of international students during a 10-days workshop led by Sami Rintala and Dagur Eggertsson in October. The event, Into the landscape, was organised by the Municipality of Seljord in cooperation with the Norwegian Theatre Academy from Østfold University, the Master of Landscape Design of Politecnico di Milano / Naba and the Master of Interior Design of NABA.

Here follows a little report by three of the participants, one for each design & construction team.

Aresha Gul at the Fisherman’s Point:

Just imagine nature all around, fresh air filled with the subtle smell of wet misty willows, the fragrance of wood penetrating into your mind and soul…. And a sea-serpent ghost hovering about.
As soon as we reached the workshop location we were told about the legend of a strange animal living in Seljord lake and often seen by local people and tourists. Of course, this story of the sea-serpent was set aside as a figment of imagination based on mere conjectures but, whatever the case maybe, we worked our structures out keeping in mind the legendary sea-serpent. In some way i
t was expected from us to provide some glimpse of the mysterious beast and to make one feel the magic of the place.
The Fishing Point installation seemed the simplest of the three projects, but designing it was quite tricky. The location was right on the bank of the Seljord Lake. The bank was divided into two
undulating. Our job was to create a connection between those two levels so fishermen may easily move from one level to another despite the slippery bedrock steep incline between the two levels. The structure was designed in the form of a wooden bridge that acts as a shelter for fishermen. Drilling and wood cutting took a lot of time but we managed to complete the task within two days. Needless to say, it was biting cold especially by the lake and to make matters worse for those who were not used to the northern climate, it was windy too. To set up the fireplace – an essential element for enjoying the pleasure of fishing – we had to make a mortar on our own by mixing concrete and rocks taken from the site. Finally, we painted the wood so as to blend it with the natural mountain scenery. On the 9th day it was great to see our efforts transformed into matter and form; a tiny landmark left on the heart of Seljord.
