(Text, images and video by Angelica Di Virgilio)
Anyone wandering in the streets of Milan – more crowded and frenetic than ever because of the pre-christmas presents rush – could bump into 12 huge fuchsia snails. Don’t worry! You’re not subject to weariness hallucinations nor shopping stress, you’re surrounded by REgeneration, the new travelling installation by Cracking Art Group (Renzo Nucara, Marco Veronese, Alex Angi, Carlo Rizzetti, Kicco, William Sweetlove) supported by the Ministry for Arts and Culture, the Ministry of the Environment and by Milan Culture Council Department.
The fuchsia snails are 2 metres high and 3 metres long, they’re made of recyclable plastic and invite the passer-by to slowness and careful listening.
“The snail stands for the reclamation of the slow quality of life, in contrast with the typically frenetic rhythm of the metropolis. The snail is a guide towards quality, it moves consciously towards an ethical and economical recovery”, the authors explain. The little creatures came out of Palazzo Marino on november 18 and now they’ve invaded Piazza della Scala, Piazza San Fedele and Piazzetta Reale, winning praise among tourists and the Milanese. You just have to get closer, touch them, and take a picture. Read more

Three works by Filippo Romano featured in the “Città Fragile” (Fragile City) exhibition curated by Aldo Bonomi, hosted by Triennale from November 19, 2009
Planning Fragile City has been a chance to gather and structure three recent works by Milan-based photographer Filippo Romano, regarding the complex relationship between cities and the humans populating them.
Nowhere Tribe is the story of a group of kids, and in particular a couple living on the streets of Milan, who in the last years has moved to Madrid. Begun in the winter of 2004, Nowhere Tribe is a document, almost a family album capturing – often intimate – moments in the daily life of a group of 20-year-olds. Read more

Le Case D’Arte Via Circo, 1 – 20123 Milano – t/f +39 02 8054071
From tuesday to friday, h 3-7 pm

While visiting the much longer Internation Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam, between October 29 and November 1 the city is also offering a very promising film festival also dealing with cities, architecture and urban planning (plus a whole lot of imagery).
Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam features “over 100 movies in just 4 days”, which is enough for the curious architecture fan to have a heart attack. That’s why, if you plan to go, we suggest you check out the program here or here first. Read more

Florence
Fortezza da Basso
Padiglione delle Nazioni
The 2009 programme will offer four days of meetings, talkshows, workshops and live performances with artists, scholars and scientists coming from all over the world. The programme was inspired by the scientist’s forecasts of a 80% of the world population living in “urban contexts” by 2050, and is meant as a laboratory for the future focusing on the city as its most immediate locus for confontation and experimentation. Among the cities, going through an important public and private transformation, under the festival’s magnifying glass are: Medellin, Seoul (2010 design capital), Shanghai (Expo 210), Dubai, Cairo, Milan (Expo 2015), San Paolo, Brasilia, Paris and Tokyo. 1064 warm white Lumiblade OLEDs, black custom circuit board back plane, aluminium suspension, custom driver software, camera based motion tracking system, custom motion tracking software by Chris O’Shea, computer.
Dim: 274cm by 128cm Available as an edition of 8 / 1AP.
You Fade To Light is an interactive media installation that provokes a kinesthetic dialogue between the viewer and his very own mirror image, and is encouraging the audience to physically and intuitively experience the creation of light itself. Seemingly a large wall with myriads of mirrors, the installation is awakened by movement in front of it and dynamically transforms the reflection of the viewer into light. Whilst a classic analogue mirror passively reflects its surroundings, You Fade To Light dynamically visualises those who stand in front of it. When the individual mirrors see movement, they react to it and gradually fade from a perfect mirror finish into a radiating surface of pure light. You Fade To Light has been conceived by rAndom international and is made of hundreds of unique OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes), a future light source currently developed by Philips Lumiblade in Aachen, Germany. The installation has recently been accessioned into the collection of the Neue Sammlung of the International Design Museum in Munich / Germany.
