Today we’re officially launching I Hate Rendering, one of the new categories we already anticipated a few days ago.
Far from any nostalgic view, and well aware of the huge contribution of modeling and rendering to the spreading and understanding of architecture, this section (with the fundamental aid of your comments!) aims at starting a wider and shared reflection on representational methods, too often suffering from the fascination/slavery to the newest technology. It is meant to somehow balance the weight of what is substantially a very efficient instrument – the computer, the rendering process – and what instead is the personal expressive and communicational skills of every designer. A section that is thus completely dedicated to sketches as a primary vehicle between the world of “ideas” and the “real” world, in which our words will be few and images will communicate.
In this spirit we today present you b4architects studio’s “hand” and their Folding Scraper, winning project of the 2007 “Poto:type” competition in Vancouver, Special Prize from the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria- Silver Interarch Medal and Honorary Diploma at XII Sofia – Interarch ’09 triennial.

Hudson Architects’ Salvation Army Citadel Corps Chelmsford, Essex has won two awards in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Region Spirit of Ingenuity Awards 2009, which recognise ingenuity, design excellence and innovativeness of architecture in the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. The building has won the Community Architecture Award as well as receiving the top accolade the East of England Building of the Year Award 2009.
Laura Foster, Head of The Norfolk Charitable Trust, sponsors of the Community Architecture Award said: “We are delighted to sponsor the Community Architecture Award and we congratulate the winner, The Salvation Army, and Hudson Architects. The building not only reflects two sides of the mission, providing an assembly hall for worship and recreational facilities for a wide range of community outreach activities, but also used pioneering modern methods of construction in a cross laminated timber panel system, which allowed the building frame to be erected in just 24 days!”
Constructed entirely of timber and cloaked in an undulating zinc roof, the new £2 million Salvation Army Citadel Corps in Chelmsford provides 900 sq m new accommodation for the mission on the site of its former premises, which it has occupied since 1974.
The new centre reflects the two sides of the mission, providing an assembly hall for worship as well as recreational facilities for the wide range of community outreach activities that The Salvation Army provides, such as an old people’s day centre, youth activities and toddler care. The building’s plan recognises that these two aspects are interconnected whilst offering flexibility and separation to permit activities to function simultaneously. An indoor sports hall, outdoor play area, lounge, kitchen and foyer with reception café facilities are arranged around a 310-seater worship hall, with administration offices located on the first floor.

The RIBA Award-winning buildings range from an Observatory at Kielder in Northumberland to the Liverpool One regeneration and retail masterplan, from a private house at Dungeness to Wexford Opera House in South East Ireland. Health centres, notably for Cancer, are well represented here as are retail buildings in their many forms, including John Lewis in Leicester and the Reiss and Monsoon headquarters in London. Seaside buildings and regeneration projects also feature in various guises. The architects whose work has been honoured this year range from small practices to large, international ones. There are also some multiple winners such as Allies and Morrison (4 awards), Hawkins/Brown (3 awards), BDP (3 awards), Niall Mclaughlin Architects (4 awards) and Penoyre & Prasad (3 awards).

RIBA President Sunand Prasad said about the 2009 RIBA Award winners:
“The RIBA Awards are a thermometer to indicate the state of health of British architecture and for 2009 the results are good: both quality and quantity have been maintained. This year’s list accurately reflects both the diversity, and the workload of UK architecture, with more schools and health buildings than usual winning awards. It is particularly heartening to see more schemes that are about regenerating our cities, towns and countryside. These awards, which are judged on a regional basis, reflect and reward the good things that are going on all across the UK, and they also form the basis of what promises to be another interesting year for the RIBA Stirling Prize.”
The 97 UK buildings that have won an RIBA Award are:

Filed Under events, news | Leave a Comment
The Milan Triennale, in co-operation with PARC, has just announced and awarded this year’s Gold Medals and Special Mentions for Italian Architecture. Every three years the Award promotes the most interesting and recent projects built in Italy and the authors who made them possible. The Gold Medal is also an exhibition about the protagonists who, through their achievements, have helped to spread contemporary architecture as a tool for civil and environmental quality. The Medal is conceived to take into consideration a larger audience and the relationship among designer, client and enterprise. The Award has become an important measure of the state of national architecture.
